Community Support

Friends of the Shelter exists thanks to the support of the dog-loving community in and around Franklin County. As a small, all-volunteer group, community organizations and individuals frequently help the Shelter dogs directly by hosting fundraising events of their own. We thank these big-hearted individuals who are giving the sick Shelter dogs a new leash on life.  Please consider hosting your own fundraiser to help the sick or injured Shelter dogs.

Byrd Wedding Favors

Justin and Libby visited the Franklin County Dog Shelter in August 2010 looking for their first pet. The couple fell in love with Ringo, a small beagle mix, and made him part of their family.

"We look back at that as the day our household became complete," said Justin. "We renamed him George (keeping with the Beatle's theme, of course)."

Justin and Libby were recently married. Rather than giving out small favors to their guests, the couple made a $500 donation to Friends of the Shelter and the dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter in honor of their buddy George. "We hope this money can help out with the animals still at the Shelter waiting for someone to open their homes and hearts to them," said Justin.

Congratulations, Justin, Libby & George! And thank you for your generous donation.

New Dog Toys Donated to Retail Shop

For Shireen Mehta’s 50th birthday party, she requested friends and family donate new dog toys to help the homeless dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter. The response from Shireen’s loved ones was an overwhelming act of generosity and love for our 4-legged friends. New toys and dog treats were donated to Friends of the Shelter’s Shop, located in the lobby of the Shelter. Every penny from sales at the shop go directly to Shelter dogs – funding medical, surgical and recuperative care of sick and injured pups, healing them so they are adoptable to a loving home. Thank you for your thoughtfulness Shireen, and thank you to your generous friends and family members!
